The Lighthouse Bar Margate Harbour There are bars, & there are bars, but if you’re looking at a unique perspective on Margate while you sip a relaxing drink, head out to the Lighthouse Bar at the end of the harbour arm. While everyone else is wandering along the seafront, looking out to sea, you’ll be enjoying a magnificent panorama of the seafront itself. Of course, you’ll also enjoy the friendly service and comfortable surroundings of the converted old fisherman’s store. With the Turner Contemporary Gallery at the other end of the jetty, it’s fast becoming the ‘in place’ for an evening out.
The Ambrette 44 King Street, Margate. Tel: 01843 231504 If ever a restaurant is full of surprises, it has to be the The Ambrette in Margate. The first, really, is that such an establishment exists at all amid the burger bars and kebab houses of the slightly shabby old town area. The next surprise is the menu, that unashamedly flies in the face of most Indian restaurants... If you’re looking for a chicken tikka masala or a curry, you won’t find it here, although conversely there is pork. Those with a long memory of Margate will recall the building as the historic George Hotel, & more recently the Indian Princess. But the man behind The Ambrette – chef Dev Biswal – has his eyes firmly on the future. This is a truly modern Indian restaurant, and Dev himself is someone that those in the know are already tipping as a star of the future. The best surprise, however, is the treat for your senses as the food arrives. The wonderfully aesthetic dishes can almost be ‘tasted’ with your eyes, well before they reach your palette. Much of the food is sourced locally, be it from land or sea, but spices have to be authentic, says the amiable chef, so they have to come from India. His signature dish is freshwater Nile perch, but if that’s off the regularly changing menu, then I can recommend the sea bass. We were fortunate to be able to sample some of the Hix & Buck range of unique imported wines, while at the Ambrette. A glass of La Maison des Maines Mainart Sauvignon Blanc was the perfect accompaniment to the fish, and the gently sparkling ‘XO’ is a treat for any occasion without dipping deep in your wallet. The Ambrette is more than just somewhere you need to try – it’s somewhere you need to try soon. With cuisine of this standard, I’m not sure how long Margate will manage to cling on to such talent!
