The town of Ashford itself may have been overrun by modern developments and vast
housing estates, but the region around it has a wonderfully diverse choice of places that
are worth visiting.
As well as the specific attractions listed below, the natural countryside throws in some
extra choices - such as the ‘Devils Kneading Trough’ escarpment above Wye, and the
winding valley of the River Stour. In addition there are a plethora of charming villages to
explore - Charing, Chilham, Wye, Hamstreet, Challock,
Pluckley, Smarden, and Rolvenden, to name but a few
- and pretty towns such as Tenderden add to the feel
of rural perfection.
For children, the ever-popular Rare Breeds Centre at
Woodchurch is a good day out. It’s ‘hands-on’ approach
means youngsters can play with the piglets or rabbits,
wander amongst the sheep, explore the colourful indoor
butterfly tunnel, and much more.
The historic town of Tenterden attracts both tourists
and locals, keen to explore its interesting small shops &
medieval buildings. Once you’ve done that, head to the
railway station for a trip back in time. Preserved steam
trains will take you on a winding journey through the lush
green Wealden countryside, stopping at small villages, &
ending at the impressive Bodiam Castle.
