Take a quick look at the list of attractions below, and it will be immediately apparent that
the Dover district - or White Cliffs Country, as its often called - is one which is dominated
by history. That, considering it’s location as the ‘Gateway to Britain’, shouldn’t be too much
of a surprise, but what often amazes the visitor is the sheer amount there is to see.
Choose almost any period, from the Bronze Age to World War Two, and you won’t just have
something to see - you’ll have a choice of things. From the Bronze Age Boat in the Dover
Museum to The Napoleonic Fortress on the Western
Heights, from Richborough Roman Fort to Sandwich’s
medieval tollgate, this region will keep you enthralled.
Of course the centrepiece is the magnificent Dover
Castle. As you approach and glance up at the mighty
walls, you begin to appreciate what an awesome and
well designed defensive structure it was. It certainly
ranks amongst the best in the country.
Away from the historical theme, Dover has a number
of pleasant parks and riverside walks to enjoy, as well
as the famous White Cliffs. On top of these’s a memorial
to Louis Bleriot, marking the spot where he completed
the first flight across the Channel.
The old market town of Sandwich is also worth exploring,
and nearby is the Wingham Bird Park - a favourite with
both locals and visitors. There are also a number of
country parks and delightful villages to seek out, and a
motor racing circuit at Lydden - just off the A2.
