The region around Tunbridge Wells, and on into the Weald, is undoubtedly amongst the most
picturesque in Kent. With the exception of a few main roads, the area has largely retained
its centuries old rural charm.
The historic spa town of Tunbridge Wells still attracts large numbers of visitors, keen to
enjoy the quaint area around the Pantiles, where it’s still possible to ‘take the waters’.
Tunbridge Wells is also the start of the preserved Spa Valley Railway (see below).
As you head into the high rolling hills and lush green
valleys of the Weald, there is a wide variety of places
worthy of a visit. From celebrated gardens at Scotney
and Sissinghurst Castles, to the National Pinetum at
Bedgebury Forest. From the 700-year old remains at
Bayham Abbey, to the comparatively recent but no less
popular attraction of Bewl Water, this truly is a part of
Kent that can offer something for all tastes.
But don’t assume that you need always head for the
main attractions. There are many small towns & villages
here that are equally worthy of exploring.
Places like Goudhurst, with its white weatherboarded
houses around the centuries old village pond, and hill
top church with magnificent views from the tower. Or
Horsmonden, where you’ll find picturesque half timbered
cottages and thatched roofs. Wherever you choose,
take your time, and enjoy it... its an area where the
world moves at a much more leisurely pace!
